Do you know that the Bible talks about singing more than 400 times? And over 50 times God’s Word commands us to sing! Singing was God’s idea. He created it - among other reasons - to soothe our souls. My wife Marilynn came up with a song that she sang to our kids over and over again as they were growing up. It goes like this: “I love you when you are happy, I love you when you are sad. I love you when you are feeling good. And when you are feeling bad. I love you, I love you, I really, really love you. No matter what you say or do, I really, really, love you. I really, really love you!” She’d sing this song to our children, especially whenever they made mistakes, teaching them that her love for them wasn’t conditional on their performance. Instead, it was a mirror of God’s unconditional love for us (1 Cor. 13:4-7). One time when my daughter Bethany was young, I made a big mistake. But instead of criticizing me, Bethany sang Marilynn’s song to me. And she laughed. I will never forget it! Adults need to be reminded of God’s unconditional love for them just as children do. Put your own tune to Marilynn’s song if you’d like. Or write one yourself! Just make sure you constantly sing a song of God’s unconditional love to your kids. It helps them grow up healthy and whole in Jesus’s great, abounding love.
